The full day tour to Jantarny, the town where amber is extracted.
Amber is a fossil resin of ancient conifers and its age is more than 50 million years. It is a semiprecious stone, alive and poetic, keeps in its depth the secret of endless charm. The Baltic Sea has been always throwing this stone to the human feet sharing its treasure. For centuries humans prescribed to amber the influence to their fate and health. Amber used to be an amulet for warriors leaving to war. In Russia wet-nurses in noble families had to wear amber necklace in order to protect babies. Egyptians used amber for embalming mummies. And now humans still believe in its medicinal qualities while science confirms that. Amber acid is a striking substance that strengthens the immunity and helps to maintain the physical form.
The main treasure of the area in the western part of the Kaliningrad region is the world’s largest amber resources. More than 90% of sun stone lies on the Baltic Sea coast, in Jantarny, former Palmnicken. During the tour to this place you will have the unique opportunity to visit the open cast mine and have a look at the only place in the world where amber is industrially extracted out of the “blue clay” and also to learn about the history of its extraction and processing. During the visit to the small private amber enterprise you will see how amber is processed from raw material to jewelry. The best place to buy amber souvenirs is in the shop belonging to the enterprise after the tour there and there will be some limited time for it. With the history and life of the town you will get acquainted in the local museum. There you will also have the chance to enjoy the diverse color spectrum of amber pieces and inclusions – insect and plant remnants. They confirm the amber vegetable origin that was proved by Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov in the XVIII century. After the museum you will be driven through the town to the beach where you will be able to see the remains of the “Anna” mine. Before the beginning of the XX century amber was extracted in shafts and the process was similar to coal mining. Memorial to the victims of holocaust shot in the mine “Anna” in January 1945 is near the mine. Then the lunch will be waiting for you in the restaurant . And after the lunch you will have some free time for walking along the seaside and probably you will be lucky to find some pieces of the sun stone that the sea waves still throw…
