Duration: 6:00 hours from port of Baltijsk.

The full day tour to Jantarny, the town where amber is extracted.

Amber is a fossil resin of ancient conifers and its age is more than 50 million years. It is a semiprecious stone, alive and poetic, keeps in its depth the secret of endless charm. The Baltic Sea has been always throwing this stone to the human feet sharing its treasure. For centuries humans prescribed to amber the influence to their fate and health. Amber used to be an amulet for warriors leaving to war. In Russia wet-nurses in noble families had to wear amber necklace in order to protect babies. Egyptians used amber for embalming mummies. And now humans still believe in its medicinal qualities while science confirms that. Amber acid is a striking substance that strengthens the immunity and helps to maintain the physical form.

The main treasure of the area in the western part of the Kaliningrad region is the world’s largest amber resources. More than 90% of sun stone lies on the Baltic Sea coast, in Jantarny, former Palmnicken. During the tour to this place you will have the unique opportunity to visit the open cast mine and have a look at the only place in the world where amber is industrially extracted out of the “blue clay” and also to learn about the history of its extraction and processing. During the visit to the small private amber enterprise you will see how amber is processed from raw material to jewelry. The best place to buy amber souvenirs is in the shop belonging to the enterprise after the tour there and there will be some limited time for it. With the history and life of the town you will get acquainted in the local museum. There you will also have the chance to enjoy the diverse color spectrum of amber pieces and inclusions – insect and plant remnants. They confirm the amber vegetable origin that was proved by Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov in the XVIII century. After the museum you will be driven through the town to the beach where you will be able to see the remains of the “Anna” mine. Before the beginning of the XX century amber was extracted in shafts and the process was similar to coal mining. Memorial to the victims of holocaust shot in the mine “Anna” in January 1945 is near the mine. Then the lunch will be waiting for you in the restaurant . And after the lunch you will have some free time for walking along the seaside and probably you will be lucky to find some pieces of the sun stone that the sea waves still throw…

Such people like Thomas Mann and Kate Kollwitz used to stay there. And famous German sculptor Hermann Brachert used to live in Rauschen and some of his works still beautify the town. The Hermann Brachert Museum is located in the house where the sculptor lived in Georgenswalde (now Otradnoe). During WWII the town was not bombed so it still can give you an impression of East Prussian architecture of the late XIX – early XX century. Now Svetlogorsk is a leading resort on the Baltic coast where the number of holiday makers during the season reaches more than 50 thousand people. Informally it is called “A pearl of the Russian Baltic”. The specific feature of the town is a scenic landscape and a variety of rare plants.

During the tour you will walk along Svetlogorsk and you will see the symbol of the town – the Water tower, the former Catholic Church “Mary, the Sea Star” where now the private organ hall works. The Herman Brachert sculptures “Nymph” and “The Girl with a Jug” are not to be missed. The memorial sign to the famous German writer and Noble Prize winner Thomas Mann is also on your way. The former Lutheran church where now Russian Orthodox Church of St. Seraphim of Sarov is placed is worth seeing as well. The coast in Svetlogork is not flat, there is a beautiful slope about 50 meters high. In order to come down to the sea it is possible to use either one of the convenient descents or a passenger lift or a cable railway. Walking along the promenade you will have the opportunity to enjoy the choice of amber souvenirs which are widely sold there.

Kaliningrad Full Day Tour with chamber concert and beer-tasting.

During this full day tour you will see the outer Koenigsberg boundaries of the 18th-19th centuries. Despite the city is more than 750 years old the fortifications that still exist trace back to 1840-1862 years of construction. And Kaliningrad gives the unique opportunity to get introduction to the 19th fortifications because very few fortifications of this kind remain elsewhere in Europe. You will be able to see bastions and ravelins, towers and gates, ramparts and moats.

The tour starts from the Brandenburg Gate, the only gate that still carries its transport function. Then passing by the Southern Railway station you will be driven along Kalinin prospect where it is possible to see the remains of the former Haberberg Front, the part of Second Wall Rampart Fortification. The second gate on your way is Friedland Gate. The tour includes the visit to the Medieval Cathedral, the symbol of the city and the bounding thread between its past, present and future. There will be also the chance to see the grave of German philosopher Immanuel Kant. Then you will be taken to the next remains of the city fortification wall. After passing Sackheim Gate you will visit the Royal Gate that houses the branch of World Ocean Museum dedicated to all city fortifications. The opportunity to see the plans of First and Second Wall Rampart Fortifications around Koenigsberg are not to be missed. After the visit to the museum exposition you are invited to listen to a short chamber concert in one of the museum rooms. Then the tour continues in the redoubt which also used to be the part of the Second Wall Rampart Fortification and now works as the restaurant with the same name “Redoubt”. The restaurant is famous in Kaliningrad for its natural and live beer that is being brewed in the redoubt cellars. There you will have the opportunity to see the whole process of brewing which would end with beer-tasting afterwards. After the drive along Lithuanian Rampart street en route passing bastion Grolman, one of the best preserved bastions, and impressive building of the Barrack Kronprince, you will see the last gate on the way – Rosgarten Gate. One more element of the Second Wall Rampart Fortification is Dohna tower. It is located on the bank of the Upper Pond and has a twin tower Wrangler Tower on the opposite side of the lake. On the way back to the ship you will drive through the administrative center of the city – Victory square which before the 1900 used to be the edge of the city and where now the former fortification moat is dried, hidden under the square and used for railway tracks. The square will attract you by the buildings of the Kaliningrad State Technical University, Kaliningrad Business Center and City Hall and the golden cupolas of the newly built Russian Orthodox St. Christ Cathedral. In the middle of the square there is Victory column erected in 2006.

Kaliningrad Sightseeing Full Day Tour with organ concert and lunch.

During this full day tour you will see the best of the city that was founded by Teutonic Order knights in the XIII century when they were expanding eastwards. So this is the city which is more than 750 years old, the city with two names – Koenigsberg and Kaliningrad, the city where fusion and interpenetrating of Germanic and Slavic cultures took place. Every passing epoch left monuments and memorials of history and culture and the visage of the city was changing during those years.

The tour starts from the parts of the city that can give you an impression of the beginning of the XX century Koenigsberg, Kutuzov Street, former Amalienau district. Then you will pass the Queen Louise Church, which now houses the Puppet Theatre. Kaliningrad is the only city in the world that can be proud of 4 people that flew into space and the monument to Fellow Spacemen is on the way. You will also see the monuments to Peter the Great, the founder of the Russian fleet and to Schiller, the famous German poet. The administrative center of Kaliningrad – Victory square – will attract you by the buildings of the Kaliningrad State Technical University, Kaliningrad Business Center and City Hall. The golden cupolas of the newly built Russian Orthodox St. Christ Cathedral dominate over the square. In the middle of it there is Victory column erected in 2006. After the drive along one of the central city streets – Leninsky Prospect – you will see the place where the Koenigsberg Castle was founded by the Teutonic Order nights in 1255. Now the digs of the castle cellars are being held by archeologists. After driving through the Brandenburg Gate, the only gate that still carries its transport function, you will have a look at the Northern Railway station, opened in 1927. In front of the Station there is a monument to Mikhail Kalinin, a person whose name was given to the city in 1946. Another former church, a Church of St. Family, the Philharmonic Hall now, is later on your way, on Khmelnitsky Street. The tour includes the visit to the Medieval Cathedral, one of the two oldest buildings of the city. Now it is the so-called symbol of the city and the bounding thread between its past, present and future. There you will enjoy the short organ concert performed in the former Dome Church. And after it you will have the opportunity to visit the Cathedral museum. There will be also the chance to see the grave of German philosopher Immanuel Kant on the way back to the bus. The lunch will be served in the restaurant and after it you will be taken to the remains of the city fortification wall. There will be an opportunity to see one of the survived gates: Rosgarten one and to visit Dohna tower, because nowadays it houses the only in Russia Amber museum.
