Klaipeda – Soviet Nuclear Missile Base

This tour combines the sites of the old town of Klaipeda along with the mysterious former Soviet nuclear missile base.
You will start the tour travelling by bus from the port to the old town of Klaipėda and have a little walk passing buildings, which date from the 18th century and stop in the Theatre Square. The square has been renovated and now sparkles with new colours. The main accent of the square is the “Taravos Anikė” sculpture. In the square you will also see craftsmen: weavers, carvers at their work. From the Old Town you will continue by bus towards Zemaitija National Park passing through residential areas of Klaipeda.
After arriving to Zemaitija National Park you will first stop at the former soviet missile base. The site was built by hands of soviet soldiers secretly in 1960’s. The site housed 4 silos, which had the R-12 surface-to-surface missiles. Those missiles were targeted towards the biggest European cities. The site was closed in 1979. Recently the base was opened for public and you will see its corridors, the main operation room, engine room and impressive 27-meter deep mineshaft.
After the tour you will rejoin the coaches and continue the sightseeing tour at the National Park and later travel back to Klaipeda. In Klaipeda you will stop for a snack break in local brewery to taste the Lithuanian made beer and try some snacks.
Afterwards return to the ship.
